RODNEY DICKSON

THIS IS NOW

May 23 - June 21, 2015

Opening Reception May 23, 6 - 8pm

Gaa Gallery is pleased to announce its inaugural exhibition, THIS IS NOW, by Rodney Dickson. Dickson was born in Northern Ireland and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. The exhibition presents the past decade of the artist’s work including paintings and neon sculptures from THE QUEEN BEE PROJECT, as well as his current paintings and a specially commissioned neon light sculpture made to celebrate the opening of Gaa Gallery. THIS IS NOW shows the evolution of Dickson’s work and highlights the relationship between distinct bodies of work the artist has produced over the last ten years.

Works featured in THIS IS NOW include small-scale paintings and neon sculptures from the QUEEN BEE, SNAKE BAR AND TEA ROOM and the QUEEN BEE, WAR REMNANTS MUSEUM. The QUEEN BEE PROJECT references the Vietnam War and began in 2004 as a response to Dickson’s experience working in Vietnam and travels throughout Asia. QUEEN BEE has toured around the world as a constructed site-specific environment and social happening. Each of the light sculptures and poster-sized paintings in the exhibition have been featured in stagings of the QUEEN BEE project. In addition to these works Dickson will also exhibit a selection of recent paintings. These paintings are a departure from the artist’s previous representational and politically motivated works. Specifically for the opening of Gaa Gallery, Dickson has also created a limited edition neon light sculpture, made in response to the abundance of neon lights seen during his recent residency in Taiwan.
