Press Release

DANI (LEVENTHAL) RESTACK + SHEILAH WILSON RESTACK
HOUSE BECOMES YOU
August 16 - October 6, 2018
Opening Reception Thursday, August 16, 6-8pm
Gaa Gallery Wellfleet

Gaa Gallery Wellfleet is pleased to announce the August 16 opening of House Becomes You, a collaborative exhibition of works by Dani (Leventhal) ReStack and Sheilah (Wilson) ReStack. House Becomes You features sculptural collage and video work that mine the visceral layers of meaning embedded in collective notions of family, domesticity, and physical desire.

The works in House Becomes You use video stills that are pulled from A Hand in Two Ways; Fisted (2017). The stills act as a background for material constructions that range from handmade holders for plexiglass to the stitching of colored gels onto the felted image. The works are marked by their conflation of material and content— foam, felt, bags of water, steel and plexiglass, frame the vulnerable physical body that is presented as erotic, sutured, slack and banal. In bringing unlike things together, the exhibition joins the feral with the domestic in a radiant illumination of queer desire, motherhood, and human understanding.

Dani (Leventhal) ReStack (b. 1972, Columbus, Ohio) is a multidisciplinary artist whose tactile videos and works on paper investigate sensorial and emotional states via juxtaposition and the intersection of stories. Culling from her own life and the lives of those around her, Dani ReStack’s images are challenging, unnerving, and tender. Her solo and collaborative video work has recently screened at the 2017 Whitney Biennial; Rotterdam International Film Festival; Oberhausen; The Ann Arbor Film Festival; PS1; The Nightingale; and Anthology Film Archives. Dani ReStack is the recipient of a Wexner Film/Video Residency Award, the Kazuko Trust, the Eileen Maitland Award and the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice Visual Arts Grant. In 2003 she received an MFA in sculpture from the University of Illinois at Chicago and in 2009 an MFA in film/video from Bard College. Her drawings are in the permanent collection of Yale University and the Museum of Modern Art. She lives in Ohio, where she is Assistant Professor of Drawing at The Ohio State University.

Sheilah (Wilson) ReStack (b.1975, Caribou River, Nova Scotia) lives and works in Columbus, Ohio, where she is currently Associate Professor of Photography and Video at Denison University.  Sheilah ReStack creates photography-based, multimedia installation, performance and video works that present conceptual considerations of the body within the bewildered paradigm of maternal and familial structures. Sheilah ReStack explores the radical benevolence of love and chosen family with an empathic gaze that does not shy away from brutality. A graduate of the Studio Arts Practice MFA program at Goldsmiths College, London, Sheilah ReStack is the recent recipient of Brown University's Howard Foundation Fellowship for Photography and a two year project grant from Canada Council for the Arts. Her work has been shown at Enjoy Gallery; Lennon Weinberg; Antioch College, City Gallery, OyG Projects and Knockdown Center.

House Becomes You opens at 230B Main Street on Thursday, August 16, with a reception from 6 - 8pm.
